Urine UroVysion Bladder Cancer FISH Assay

Reference Number: AA-00308

SECTION EIGHT

Dahl-Chase Diagnostic Services

MOLECULAR PATHOLOGY TESTING

URINE UROVYSION BLADDER CANCER FISH COLLECTION

Clinical Significance:

The UroVysion Bladder Cancer FISH assay is designed to detect aneuploidy for chromosomes 3, 7, 17, and loss of 9p21 locus via fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in urine specimens from persons with hematuria suspected of having bladder cancer.  Results from the UroVysion FISH assay are intended for use, in conjunction with and not in lieu of current standard diagnostic procedures, as an aid for initial diagnosis of bladder carcinoma in patients with hematuria and subsequent monitoring for tumor recurrence in patients previously diagnosed with bladder cancer.

Specimen Requirements and Collection:

Urine specimens for Vysis UroVysion FISH testing are collected using the ThinPrep Urocyte Urine Collection Kit. Kits are available through Dahl Chase Diagnostic Services. A minimum of 33mls of urine (maximum 60ml) must be collected.  Collection instructions are included with the kit.

Specimens are transported at refrigerated temperature and must be processed within 48hours of collection. Specimen collection should be Monday through Friday.

Forms:

UroVysion FISH testing is ordered on a Molecular Pathology requisition form which is included in the UroVysion collection kit.

Transport:

Specimens should be collected Monday through Friday and refrigerated, delivered, and  processed within 48 hours of collection.

Reference Range:

Fluorescent signal quantification of morphologically abnormal nuclei.  A positive result is 4 or more nuclei with a signal gain of 2 or more chromosomes (3, 7, and 17) in the same nucleus and/or homozygous loss of the 9p21 locus in 12 or more nuclei.
